AVG 8 went ok on my laptop and home desktop, but I do know someone who had to unistal V8 and then reinstal it due to problems. On the second installation it worked ok. That might help in your case?

AVG was slow for me many moons ago so I ended up ditching it in favour of Avira (http://www.free-av.com/). It pops up a single ad every time it updates but that doesn’t bother me. Avira has never given me grief in the few years I’ve been using it.
If you really want optimised, non-intrusive AV, use NOD32. http://www.nod32.com.au - not free though.

Even better, use an operating system that doesn’t require antivirus software. Ubuntu is a good place to start. Am I showing my true tech-head colours now? (:

I’ve found AVG 8 to be a bog, also. I’m not switching away from it, even though it has slowed down our computers. But I AM having to recalibrate my expectations

AVG 8 does have known problems - check out various support sites and you’ll see some people do have issues…. we got rid of it on one of ours. Stick to the old version!

yeah, I had problems as well changed to Avast, http://www.avast.com/ -it’s free, picked up stuff AVG didn’t - similar deal to AVG. Here’s a review on AVG v Avast, I’m sure you can Google others - http://blog.shankarganesh.com/2007/11/07/avg-vs-avast/

I’ve found that the Web shield and Link Scanner features in AVG 8 cause the slowdown in performance. Good protection, but at what price?

Now running avira and seeing a marked difference. I thought it was AVG, but it was hard to guess why.

I can’t comment on AVG8 but I always found AVG7 clunky and intrusive (with notification windows ’stealing focus’ and all that kind of thing), as well as being relatively slow because it would scan any file if it so much as twitched! Paranoia-driven, I think.
I moved to Avast a few months ago and have been very happy with it; no viruses have got through the net and it just does its biz.

If you go to a geeky website like Whirlpool, they currently have a warning about AVG 8:

“Grisoft AVG Anti-Virus 8.0 is malicious software causing undue load on popular websites such as Whirlpool, and wastes your bandwidth. If you (or anyone you know) use any AVG products, we urge you to consider superior alternatives such as Avast, Avira, and others.”

An update on the Whirlpool thing - apparently AVG have backpedalled, and changed the program. A re-install is supposed to fix it.
