Carols by Torchlight?

In keeping with the new advanced risk management policies, ‘carols by candlelight’ seems to be slowly going the way of ‘monkey bars’ in kids playgrounds and candles are being replaced with glow sticks or torches.

Lame

Somehow it just isn’t the same if you can’t set fire to your program or drip hot wax on the bare shoulders of the person in front of you…

Not that I’d go anyway…

On the carols question Rod

asks this:

What is the big attraction for the non-churched with Carols by Candlelight?

I know that it’s nice to be with family and be at an outdoor event and all that, but let’s look at it. Thousands upon thousands of people who are not interested in anything the ‘church’ has to offer for the other 364 days of the year, will turn up at a park to sing ‘outdated’ songs about a religion they don’t believe. Why?

Good question I reckon! Tell him what you think.

Disappearing Blog?

If you can’t read this blog then it might be because I have exceeded my allocated ‘bandwidth allotment’. I am up to 97% for this month and chances are it’ll exceed that…

I’m not sure all of what it means.

Any other typepad users able to fill me in?

Update:

Response from Typepad

Thanks for the note. We will be charging overusage fees for bandwidth and disk overusage.

We haven’t yet set the rate for those fees, and we will not actually be charging them until we have an option in place to purchase additional bandwidth or disk space at a lower cost.

Until then, your site will not be turned off if go over.

Overload? (Or just a bad day?…)

Most days I love having my finger in about 5 pies at once!

Today I am feeling a little overwhelmed with the different hats I wear. I must confess to not feeling like I am in control like I should be.

My primary roles outside of home are:

Brighton team leader – I think we are doing ok
Forge WA Director – I think we are doing ok too
Soon to be Phys Ed Teacher – this scares me a bit as I still rarely even think about it. Hopefully I will get some passion up for it soon!
Ovesight of Church Planting for Baptist Churches – this is a voluntary role so I could ‘cruise’ in it – but that’s not me. I want to see us plant effective new churches so I am committed to this. I want to see this take off, but it gets the left overs of my energy and creativity.

Today though my head hurts… it feels like too divergent a playing field.

If I could make 22k and not teach I’d be interested…

Nothing is in a mess at present, but I am finding it hard to focus on 4 things at once.

Random Thoughts From a Sermon

Today I was unusually apprehensive about preaching – probably because I knew that the message I had was going to really ruffle a few feathers. I felt I needed to speak about the fact that the church must change or die – but country folks are by and large much more change resistant than others.

I had a great time with the leaders on Friday night – they were very open to new ways of doing mission and being church.

This morning seemed to go ok.

Here are a few random quotes from my notes:

‘its ironic that conservatives say we are becoming ‘less’ Baptist by changing. In fact conservatism is an indication we became less Baptist a long time ago.’

‘Some of us have even been brought up to believe that the church exists for us – that we have a right to youth groups, kids ministries, that pastors are paid to visit us and do what we want them to. I think we would struggle to find those ideas in scripture. We would hear that we are love one another and encourage one another and serve one another and the role of paid worker is to equip us to do that and to be missionaries in our own communities.’ download girl in the park the free

‘More often today we want people to come to us – to our programmes – to our meetings – to our church services – to become disciples. Apart from the fact that we don’t produce disciples that way, reality is that most people don’t want to do it.’

‘When the church looks inward it dies – when the church looks out it finds its true purpose and in that it finds life.’

‘Most of our churches operate almost exclusively by inviting. Now its not to say that inviting people to things is wrong – but for many of us that has become our only way of evangelism. Bringing people to a place where we feel comfortable – where we out number them – where our culture dominates – and where they probably feel like fish out of water.’

‘Henry Lawson’s poem ‘The Christ of the Never’ tells the story of a bush missionary who hung out with the bushmen and lived like they did – who connected with them. And in writing of him Lawson contrasts him with the churchmen he knew of who he says “feel not who know not but preach” Those who feel not – who know not – but who preach. If you haven’t felt another person’s world, if you don’t know another person’s world then your right to preach just isn’t there. Only those who venture into the world have the credibility to speak to that world. ‘

‘Maybe some of us even long for church to be the one place that is constant – where we can escape the ‘change fatigue’ that hits us from everywhere else. I have heard that said. But if the church is serious about mission then we must be a place that is constantly changing – constantly moving – constantly trying new things to see if we can better connect. Sorry if that adds to your change fatigue! But we have no choice if we are serious about mission.’

‘Paulo Coehlo once said “The ship is safest when it is in port. But that’s not what ships were made for”. This ship needs to venture into the stormy seas of mission in a culture that is open but turbulent. You can be a passenger and sit below deck and pretend that we’re still moored up to the dock or you can get up on deck and develop some new skills and gather some new ideas and in the process you’ll see the church connect with ordinary Australian people like it never has before.’

Maybe you can see why I was apprehensive!15 minutes download

Richie Richie!!

From Darryl

On the final day of the Adelaide Test match, they showed a digital thermometer with 39c on one line and 103F on the second line. Upon seeing that, the great man – Richie Benaud – made the following classic comment (say it out loud in your best Richie Benaud voice):

‘Some of you out there may not recognise the second line, that is Fahrenheit. When I played, I played under Fahrenheit, and let me tell you, it is every bit as hot as Celsius…’

Consumerism and Art

Looks like an interesting art exhibit at the Bread Box Gallery in Perth, exploring the connection between consumerism and art.

The ‘gallery’ is set up like a shop with the exhibits the products. Sounds like people have been walking in unawares and trying to buy the stuff!

You can check it out at 233 James St in the city or read thr article in today’ West Australian.

Katanning

We are here in Katanning staying with Danelle’s parents until Monday. It’s a little town of 4000 people about 3 hours south east of Perth. I’m here to speak with the local church leaders about one of their pastors doing a Forge

internship next year.

Hopefully they will agree that the experience will be valuable for him and support him in it. Although it is a ‘risky’ venture for an older conservative, established church as it will bring some serious change.

Where to From Here? Part 5

The previous 4 posts have contained the nuts and bolts of what we discussed on Saturday and I share them with you because I m believer in ‘open source’ learning. If we share our stuff then we all grow and we might even develop ideas that help us better do mission and church in this changing climate.

I do share them a little bit reticently because I am only too aware of our tendency to look for ‘models’ and ‘plans’ and easy answers when what we should be doing is seeking God and letting him form the plan for us.

We have no idea how or even if this will all work. It might be that we get 6 months thru the year and change everything – it might be that we have stumbled on something that works for us for quite a while.

I’m not too worried – its all part of the adventure!download american outlaws dvdripdownload universal soldier movie

Backyard Missionaries Story

Al Hirsch & Mike Frost (of Shaping of Things to Come rocky v free download fame) are in the process of writing a new book but this time telling the stories of emerging missional churches in the land of Oz.

I got an email this morning asking if Id like to write a chapter about our adventures as backyard missionaries here in Brighton.

Sounds like fun – there will be about 25 different stories as well as some undergirding philosophy stuff. I’m not sure when they hope to get it out.
