Lars And the Real Girl

The other day Scott recommended this movie download into the blue online download 6th day the dvdrip as worth a look.

So last night we got it out and watched it. In case you don’t know the story, its about a socially awkward bloke who struggles to relate to people, especially girls, sending off to buy a ‘real life doll’. This doll then becomes his ‘girlfriend’ and he treats her as if she were human.

It was a story with some great potential and had some great moment, but it really didn’t crack it for me. The energy level rarely got above 5/10 and the idea wore a bit thin after a while. What was of interest was the way the local small town community shared the experience with him, but even then their response was a little too homogenous to be believable.

A few months ago SBS ran a doco on ‘men who love dolls’, a look at the truly bizarre lives of several men who buy these dolls partly as sex partners, but also – for some – as actual companions. I was going to post about it the next day and include the youtube clip, but it was actually quite disturbing in places and in the end I deleted the post.

Some stuff we just don’t need to know I reckon…

Buzzing

Today was one of those days when I came home physically wiped out and very ready to crash early. A couple of glasses of red added to the woosy feeling and at 9.00 I turned the lights out ready to nod off.

But as much as my body was weary my brain was buzzing. It has happened several times now that I have gone to bed physically wiped, only to lie there for 2 hours thinking thru everything that’s going on in my life – and there is quite a bit at the moment.

Its even more strange because I was up early this morning, worked long and hard and almost fell asleep on the couch.

But the fact that it has happened a few times at the end of long physical days makes me wonder if (for me at least) my brain needs to be active for a certain number of hours each day before I can nod off?…

Anyone else experienced this?

Its just something I am pondering – now that I am up from bed and trying to use up some of that excess ‘brain energy’.

Camping Again

This weekend coming up will be another camping adventure for the friendly folks of Writtle St.

Our neighbours on either side as well as the 2 families across the road have signed us up to spend another weekend in Busselton, diving, skiing and probably drinking copious amounts of alcohol. (As much as I love a glass or two of red I am in a different league to these guys who regularly indulge until the wee hours.)

The weather is looking pretty dodgy, but I imagine it will be a goer either way so we may discover the waterproof (or other) qualities of our camper-trailer.

We have been blessed with some brilliant neighbours who are some of the most hospitable and engaging people I have ever met.

We’re looking forward to episode 2 of the Writtle St camping experience!download son of the mask online

Caught Napping

We had a very late night yesterday as we were up playing poker with a few families from the street. It was a fun evening – even for a non cards player. You learn a lot about people in a poker game.

In my tiredness today I went for an afternoon nap, then slept longer than I should have and now I can’t sleep tonight…

Don’t you hate that…

So I’ll stay up until 1am then wake up feeling like crap again tomorrow!

Maybe the glass of port I am sipping will serve as some kind of anesthetic and will see me nod off sooner…

Easily Excited

By the look of Colin Barnett you’d think he had just been voted in with an overwhleming majority.

Reality is we don’t know who has won the WA state election, but this bloke is obviously weeing himself with joy that around 50% of the people have found him a less annoying option that the Labour crew.

Driscoll Addresses Sydney Anglicans on 18 Obstacles to Effective Evangelism

Driscoll

says some very challenging things about the Sydney Anglican brand of Australian Christianity.

However his comments cut more broadly across the Australian church as a whole and point to some of our glaring weaknesses as a wider body.

Hirschy download edtv dvdrip free ace ventura when nature calls tells me we have much to learn from the Americans about entrepeunrial spirit and supporting one another compared to the Aussie play it safe attitude mixed with tall poppy syndrome.

I’m not a Driscoll fan at all, but I think he says some useful stuff here if we are prepared to listen. HT

Missional Misstep?

I think David Fitch could well be onto something here. I like this bloke and the way he thinks and writes. Read on…

Can the gospel be too big? For some of us in the missional church movement, this question borders on heresy. We regularly caution that the gospel is not only about what Jesus can do for me. It is primarily about the transformation of our very way of life into God’s mission for the world. We resist any temptation to turn the gospel into anything that might be too “user friendly.” The mission of God (missio Dei), so we proclaim, must be all-encompassing, and we must become participants in it.

Yet for all the good in this approach, there may be another heresy beneath the surface. For in protecting the bigness of the gospel, we risk making the Christian life inaccessible to those outside of it. As a result, amid the current swell of appreciation for missio Dei theology in American churches, and the outcries against a gospel that has become too small, I find myself concerned about the ways we may unintentionally be making the gospel too big.

Integrity

“Christianity is now almost impossible to explain, not because the concepts aren’t intelligible, but because the living, moving, speaking examples of our faith don’t line up with the message. Our poor posture overshadows the most beautiful story and reality the world has ever known.”

The Evangelist

After I had preached on Sunday morning a man swaggered up to me. He looked mid forties, stocky and like his nose had been broken more times than he could remember. I was talking to a member of the church and he joined our conversation.

“So, does anybody do any witnessin aroun here?” he asked.

It felt like a loaded question. I don’t think either of us knew quite what to say…

“I guess it depends on what you mean by that” I said. I sensed that he meant standing on street corners and preaching, or stopping people in the mall.

“Well I mean going out in the street and talking to people about Jesus. There’s a whole world out there of needy people who aren’t gonna come in here and without Jesus they’re goin to hell.”

He was clearly edgy and wasn’t feeling like we were receiving his question real well. The fact that I had lampooned the wacko street preacher during my message may not have helped either.

He talked for a little bit and told us his story. He had been sent to prison several years ago for violent crime. He had lived a violent life and was a street fighter. But during a stint in solitary confinement he had met God in a ‘damascus road’ type of way.

He then started sharing his faith in prison and just before he got out he was leading a Bible study of over 200 men in the prison. His approach to evangelism was much like his approach to other things in life – no holds barred and no prisoners – pardon the pun.

After a short conversation where my friend spoke of the church’s craft group, and kids ministries I could see him glaze over and zone out. This wasn’t what he wanted to hear.

He had come looking for a church that would support him in his own evangelistic work, post prison and that would also be a church that would welcome his new converts. He hadn’t found one anywhere.

He drifted off from the conversation clearly frustrated. I was frustrated too.

Partly because I had encountered someone with raw passion and it had exposed me as having gone soft in some ways. I was frustrated because I knew what he was on about – there simply aren’t too many churches where people like him are welcome and where he would be understood and encouraged and where his friends would be accepted. He is a strong character with lots of opinions and he would be a handful. His friends would change the tone of the average middle class church.

As he drifted off I sensed God saying ‘go and have lunch with him’. I think it was partly so I could learn more about evangelism from someone who was naturally gifted and partly so I could encourage him not to give up on the church. In his zeal he was convinced that anyone who wasn’t doing evangelism like him was not serious about God and he had little room for those with any fear.

I have shared this frustration over the years and at times have been guilty of projecting my own passions and gifting onto others. Maybe I could help him see the value in sticking with others and helping them develop.

I caught him as he was walking down the street to his beaten up white ford meteor. I invited him out and he took me up on it.

We had a great time together and I found myself driving home inspired by this left field Jimmy Swaggart fan who wept over people who didn’t know Jesus and who went from half way house to half way house until someone would listen. He had clearly had such a life changing encounter with God that nothing was going to stop him or slow him.

I was rebuked for my lampooning of the street preacher and reminded that the kingdom of God is very very diverse. As he treads the streets of Fremantle he will connect with people who would never give me the time of day.

I pray he finds a community of people who will welcome him and his friends and who will support him in his passion for helping the broken and messed up follow Jesus.

I pray the evangelist won’t get tamed.up in smoke free
