The other day Scott recommended this movie download into the blue online download 6th day the dvdrip as worth a look.
So last night we got it out and watched it. In case you don’t know the story, its about a socially awkward bloke who struggles to relate to people, especially girls, sending off to buy a ‘real life doll’. This doll then becomes his ‘girlfriend’ and he treats her as if she were human.
It was a story with some great potential and had some great moment, but it really didn’t crack it for me. The energy level rarely got above 5/10 and the idea wore a bit thin after a while. What was of interest was the way the local small town community shared the experience with him, but even then their response was a little too homogenous to be believable.
A few months ago SBS ran a doco on ‘men who love dolls’, a look at the truly bizarre lives of several men who buy these dolls partly as sex partners, but also – for some – as actual companions. I was going to post about it the next day and include the youtube clip, but it was actually quite disturbing in places and in the end I deleted the post.
Some stuff we just don’t need to know I reckon…
I thought when you dissed “Into the Wild” you were having an ‘off’ review, but now you have sealed it for me – you have no taste in good movies… but I’ll continue to pray for you 😉

ahhh the penultimate masculine stereotype – I reckon Lars and his community has more to teach you and me than Rambo could ever dream of reaching for 😉 other than how to blow the crap out of stuff and slur every “s”!

As for Lars – I just don’t think they told a great story. It had huge potential, but was pretty one dimensional.

sorry mate – but you have missed a truly beautiful movie experience, one that speaks of, and dares to imagine the new community we claim to dream of as Christ followers. This had “gospel story” and “coming kingdom” dripping all over it.

Ah, XY Docs – not for the faint-hearted! Yes, goes to show that some people are so weird, it is probably worth locking them up.
Heck, the guys in ‘guys who like dolls’ don’t like the rest of us enough to care that they are locked up, and I’ll feel just that bit safer!!

Hamo…sad – very sad. The fact that she was a ‘sex’ doll was not even a major part of the story. Ithink that you might have some issues that we should talk about about! 🙂

I loved Chocolat – I got ‘the point’ with Lars – just didn’t think it was a story that was told anywhere near as well as Chocolat

Not a line ball in terms of conversation – more in terms of whether that doco should be discussed on here.
I am just aware of the diverse readership of the blog and for some I think it would push buttons I don’t want to push.
It was me ‘holding back’ on a conversation I thought would have been interesting but possibly not appreciated by some 🙂
And a good call you made, Hamo. You had to see it to believe it (I saw it – I only just believe it!), and you would want to have done some other sexology or psychology type study to get beyond the fact that these guys are weird.
SBS puts XY Docs on once a year for about 12-15wks or so (normally something mundane like ‘Tour De France’ interupts it!). Some docs are genuinely interesting, some are just bizare and good for a laugh, some are seeking to justify the (almost) unjustifyable.
I have to side with Scott and Otherendup on this one Hamo! TOP class, Kingdom focused movie!
Would watch it again anytime.
